Context Engineering Is Replacing Prompt Engineering as the New AI Discipline
Prompt engineering taught developers how to communicate with language models. Context engineering asks a more important question: what information should the model have before it makes a decision? As AI applications evolve from chatbots into agents, prompts are becoming only one component of a much larger system. Models now need access to relevant documents, user history, tool outputs, policies, memory, structured data, and real-time information—all assembled dynamically at runtime. This shift is giving rise to context engineering, an emerging discipline focused on designing the information environment around an AI model. The result is a fundamental change in how developers build reliable AI systems: instead of endlessly refining prompts, they are engineering the context that makes those prompts effective.
